On the mycotoxin determination methods for what purpose we use internal standards? Does it have any advantages that using external standard does not have? Why do we just not use external standards?
The principal advantage of using an internal standard in any method is that - if chosen properly - you are quite sure, that the recovery of the analyte is identical to the standard.
Using an external standard a similar recovery to the analyte has always to be proven.
Thus in a quantitative method, there are large advantages in using an internal standard.
Carbon13-labelled mycotoxins have been become quite popular for LC-MS/MS based (multi-)mycotoxin analysis in the recent years as they compensate matrix effects related to electroyspray ionization process
