It may be because of the teacher personality and his behavior in the classroom such as his inability to engage in dialogue and discussion with students .Teaching method and classroom management may engender fear in some students' lives .

In African, it is attributable to fear and panic teachers instill in our children.

I think may be from respect

One school of thought believes that teachers should be very strict in the classroom while others believe that amiable nature of instructors yields better results. That school of thought student have much fear from teachers and hide to face the teachers which i personlly think not good.

Teachers are believed to be disciplinary, therefore student do fear them in public anytime they are doing weird things in public and they accidentally happen to meet them.

I will not let them !!! I will talk to them or at least wave at them . So far I have never come across any student who has ignored me ...

Deep respect for teachers on the part of many young Africans

I tthink its matter of respect..

It is not for all the students but certain students after their behavior & in certain cases their non disciplinary action have directly or indirectly come to the notice of teacher & such student they see the teacher anywhere even in public program also they will arrange to hide from the teacher outlook .

This is my personal opinion

some time they are afraid and may be those students shy

I see a lot of answers here that crack me up 😂 😂 😂. But it reminds me of my childhood. Display of respect is not unidirectional and could be funny depend on the state of mind of the student. Many times also, we wrongly translate fear for respect. However, why many answers here may be based on previous personal experiences which dates back years ago, it may not be reflection of what is obtainable in today's world. A lot has changed from then to now. Hence, you can't do justice to this question here on research gate. You may need a questionnaire targeted to current students.

Some students don't want their teachers to know what they do outside of class.

Because of what they do

Fear is definitely there, not only in Africa but everywhere and this maybe from a bad experience (misbehaviour in class?).

They are everywhere I go, talk and welcome, they are a constant source of optimism
