Why do dark matter and dark energy exist in the universe?
For example, when we throw a glass of water onto the ground, the water spreads across the surface—but in some areas, it doesn’t spread evenly.
This happens because the surface has different properties and doesn't behave uniformly. Similarly, in the universe, variations in physical conditions might lead to the existence of dark matter and dark energy, which help explain these irregularities.
There's no a priori reason for dark matter to exist in our Universe; it's a discovery, an experimental fact about our Universe, that indicates its presence (the rotation curves of galaxies). What its content is, however, remains to be determined.
Dark energy is an inevitable property of general relativity in the form of the cosmological constant, whose value-and sign-was measured in 1998. Neither could be deduced from theory, which is consistent whatever the value and the sign of the cosmological constant; a measurement was necessary.
