Black glassy phase is sintering on test specimens on stainless steel ,which is sintered with the specimens and do not come off , so we are unable to observe iron boride coatings,kindly someone help me out that why this is happening and how to overcome it, we are using 65 wt% Borax,14 wt%boric acid and 21wt% ferro silicon in a graphite crucible for 800-950 deg C for 2-4 hours.Kindly help me with this with my surface engineering project.

Receive boride diffusion layer on stainless steel is a difficult task. You should know the following:
- Other alloying elements in the steel hinder the diffusion of boron. What are they in your case ?;
- "Liquid" boration in your case is not the most appropriate method. You should try "solid phase" boration. And most modern method of toothpaste boration!
For the last method I have nothing to offer you.

I think that is the problem and the inconvenient of slurry salt bath (liquid) you should clean the samples to remove the contamination, it will be better if u use Ekaboor.

If you use a salt bath consisting of 70% Na2B4O7 + 30% SiC at 850 ºC and 950 ºC for 4 h and 6 h, you can obtain boride layer approx. 20 - 30 μm thickness.
