I haven't watched all of the tv series (yet - we are watching them now) but I have read all of the books. The TV series is more violent than the books but as an avid reader of fantasy I was drawn to the books because they felt more real than many other fantasy books I've read. People, main characters, died. The settings were foul and muddy. People were dirty. There were clashes of culture. And the political intrigue, it seemed as close to court politics as could be and has echoes into current political situations (especially in Australia with our rotating PMs).
