Many molecular biology E.coli strains are recA- to prevent recombination of the plasmid with the host chromosome, or scrambling of the plasmid, and/or mixing of more than one plasmid if co-infected. However, some strains [BL21star(DE3)] are recA+, and I'm wondering why these are recA+? What is the advantage for protein expression?
