I noticed when I adjust the pH of chromophore solution containing surfactant (triton X100) for example at pH=3 using HCl, it gave me absorption and emission spectra which are completely different when i added NaOH and then added HCl to adjust pH at 3. However, when i repeated the experiment without surfactant, no change was observed.
Remember that the pH value maybe affect your chromophore (protonation or de...)
I think it this case, some chemical reaction already occurred with high pH value (react with OH-). if chemical structure already changed, you can not obtain original one

Since without surfactant you do not see the changes you may consider that TX-100 is itself undergoing some sort of changes. Remember TX-100 has -OH group. I believe you are working on the concentration higher than CMC. So please check (without the chromophore) after doing the same (changing pH) you are able to get the CMC at the same concentration. In short check the CMC at pH 3 and re-acidified pH 3. If they are different then problem is with TX-100 itself, if same then we have to think of something else.
