The best way is to review papers published in top conferences such as ICLR and ICML. From the papers you are interested in, try to find problems that you understand and would like to invest time on it. Read papers related to it and see what has been done in the last 2 years. Try to find holes and gaps. There are many problems in different field of ML from application to HW implementation.

First, study clustering, classification and deep neural networks.
