Please recommend which platform is significantly better for microRNA sequencing and how much is the difference between both in terms of cost and efficiency.

As per available data in research articles and in public databases illumina is widely used platform for genome wide microRNA detection. That also attest its efficiency. Regarding cost you may inquire with outsourcing agencies to get better idea. Thanks!
I would agree that there are many more published reports using the Illumina technology, however Ion Torrent does offer this. I am not aware of a head to head performance comparison which has been published. At our institution, Ion Proton sequencing is significantly less expensive than Illumina sequencing, however that may depend on what platform options are available to you are your institution.

We used Illuminia and were happy with our results. Around $5K for 18 libraries plus sequencing.
Illumina platform is much better and cost effective and widely use for small RNA sequencing
