I want to fabricate a hydrogel using alginate-di-aldehyde and gelatin via Schiff-base reaction. Going through the literature, I found that some papers have used PBS and ultrapure water for Alginate-di-aldehyde and gelatin, respectively. But in some articles, it has been stated that 0.1M Borax had been used to prepare both precursor solutions.

What is each of these solvents' exact difference in preparing the final hydrogel?

Thanks.
