I did media optimization for one of marine bacteria..the growth and activity were observed.10 types of media were inoculated.. I see six types of media had shown growth as well as activity..The activity was relatively same for few media but the biomass is different..Iam going for mass production of bioactive compound..the extracellular metabolite was tested for antimicrobial assay..which should be given preference..more biomass with more activity or less biomass with more activity..
More biomass suggests that the media is favorable for the growth of the culture
Less biomass suggests that the media is less suitable for the growth of the culture but in this case there may be chances of some cryptic metabolites secretion.
If your target is to characterize the pure compound then I would suggest that run a TLC, compare the no of bands (no of compounds). And then select the media in which you get less number of bands.
It would be easy for you to purify a compound from a mixture having less number of compounds.
