Dear colleague,

I successfully cultured Spirogyra insignis in BG-11 medium (see Flores-Moya et al. 2005, New Phytologist 166: 655-661). This medium is very useful for a lot of species of freshwater algae. On the other hand, I don´t have any previous experience with Spirulina and, therefore, I can not to recommend any culture medium for this species.

At navallur, arokonam they cultivate the spirulina algae in wide spread

I have successfully used BG-11 medium + Vitamin B12 supplement, but i recommend you an isolation of two steps:

1) Enrichment step using BG-11 medium

2) Selective-enrichment step using SP medium for Spirulina.

For Spirogyra you can transfer Spirogyra observed in light microscope to a solid BG-11 medium.

You can try Zarrouck's media for Spirulina and BBM for Spirogyra.

Hi, there are several media described to culture Spirulina like as Zarrouck, Schlosser, Jourdan. If you want to keep in a small volume (2 or 5L) I suggest Schlosser but I you want to scale up to more than 20L try Jourdan media but use industrial nutrients not laboratory grade (like Sigma or other).

I am using BG11 (Rippaka et al.) media for culturing of Arthospira and Spyrogyra, BG11 media good for freshwater algal culture.

I have the same question with Nehal D. Shah.

Recently, I have work on chlorella and freshwater rotifer (Brachionus calyciflorus), I have no background in chlorella and rotifer before. Please give me some suggestions about the following issues:

1. Which media is good for freshwater algal culture (chlorella on a large scale)?

2. What do you think chlorella (light green) has negative effects on Brachionous calyciflorus? If you know can you give me the advice to solve this problem?
