I want to dope silicon oxide with erbium but I have some doubts about the reaction mechanism because Erbium is a rare earth material and is not n or p type, so I would like to know if Erbium is really doping silicon oxide or what is happening with the material.

Embedding the RE ions into a SiO2 matrix should cause the change in the structural and electronic states of material and, as a consequence, in the optical properties. It's known, that there are a number of optically active intrinsic defects in SiO2 (in particular, oxygen defecient centers - ODC - whose luminescence is observed in the visible spectral range). Er ions, embedded into the SiO2 can affect the energy structure of these defects as well as their concentration and also can creaty new types of optical centers. For example, the metal Er can cluster and form quantum dots in the volume of SiO2 matrix.
