The main difference between colorimeter and spectrophotometer is that colorimeter is a device which measures absorbance of specific colours,whereas a spectrometer measures transmittance or reflectance as a function of wavelength.

I agree with Selvan. I often use UV spectrophotometer measuring OD of cell cultures and general samples.

In my laboratory I also use UV spectrophotometer to measure the OD of bacterial suspension and I use turbidometer to measure the turbidity of a solution.
