I am working on removal of sulphur from coal. For this, I need to know which method is best and most accurate for determination of inorganic, sulphate and organic sulphur present in coal.
I would appreciate if somebody can share the experience.

Thank you very much for your interesting technical question. Sulfur may be present in various forms in coal e.g. hydrogen sulfide, elementary sulfur, organic thiols and sulfides etc. So a single analytical technique can not remove/extract the total sulfur from coal and one should apply multiple techniques. For example, hydrogen sulfide may be removed by shaking the sample with cadmium chloride solution followed by the gravimetric analysis of the resulting CdS precipitate. Elementary sulfur may be removed by oxidizing the sulfur to sulfate followed by precipitation as BaSO4. For detailed methodology and more example please have look at the attached articles. In the course of this work total and various forms (organic and inorganic) of sulfur have been exctracted and identified in raw coal samples.
