When analyzing specific results in business, sports and investing it is often difficult to distinguish what share of the outcome was attributable to skill and what share of the outcome was attributable to luck. Michael Mauboussin author of “The Success Equation” (Harvard Business Review Press, 2012) examined the various studies on the skill vs. luck topic and analyzed the implications for investors. His goal was to use the results of the studies to provide a guide to allow investors to make better decisions. Based on his analysis of historical data he created the following luck/skill continuum (See attached figure). What is your opinion on the topic? Is it more important to be lucky or skillful? How decision making process can enhance both skill and luck?
