I am doing plasmid purification for about 20 Microgram yield , I wonder which is best Qiagen mini prep or promega ? and is the expiry date of Qiagen kit 1 year from opening the kit or the production date as it is not clear.
These kits are equivalent as they are based on the same protocol so go for the one you prefer. Expiry date is fixed from the date you get the product delivered whatever the date of opening.
I will assume you are referring to Qiagen's Qiatip-based kits and Promega's Wizard SV-based kits.
Qiagen mini preps are ion exchange-based whereas Promega's are silica-based. The Qiagen kit will yield transfection-quality preps but is more laborious/involved. The Promega kit is faster (and probably cheaper, haven't checked) but the quality of the DNA preps will not be as high -although it's suitable for 99% of the things people usually do with them: restriction digestion, PCR, sequencing, etc.
WRT the expiry date, don't worry too much. Most kits will perform well even way past their expiration date. Storage conditions are more important.
To my opinion, Qiagen product is generally considered a better product for purification, and more expensive. In the University I graduated, Qiagen products are the main products suggested by the Sequencing Center for many uses.
For miniprep, I think Promega's kits should be good enough.
