Mahfuz may well be right. Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri holds that the only creation ex nihilo is divine creation. Therefore all other creation is really more or less innovation. At some point innovators take giant leaps in their innovations, and these exceptional finds are really what we call creations, although at base they consist only of making something old new.
Well, "creation" versus "creativity" represents 2 very different factors. Creativity is only dreaming up something, creating is actually doing it, and innovation requires both creativity and creation. Does this sound right to you?
I think I just explained what I think is the difference above. I can be very creative in painting for example but painting has already been invented so I am not an innovator.
Sajjad, Plato defined creativity in the Symposium. He used the word, poíesis, and said it was the process of making being out of nothing. Now, innovation, as I understand the word, means existing within a previous state ("in"), and without renouncing that state, making something "new" ("novum") within it. This is not strictly bringing into being a something that previously was nothingness.
Angela, Thanks, Somewhere I heard even invention is different from innovation, always I am confusing with creativity, innovation, invention, discovery, problem solving and design, apparently all of them are in the same direction but different approaches
Nelson, thanks, creating something from nothing is not understandable for me, always there are somethings and people improve them , a slight modification or very harsh improvement
In my opinion, I think generally this should be the sequence: Creativity --> Innovation --> Invention.
Creativity - capability to conceive & generate original ideas (conceptual)
Innovation - capability to transform the ideas into application (usage) / implementation of something new (actionable)
Invention - capability to use innovation & develop some tangible products (productizable)
Note: above definitions are derived when all three are relatively compared. Because if they are being defined individually, one might overlap with others e.g. creativity might also include the creation / development of a blueprint / prototype / master piece.
Also I think in quantitative terms, invention is subset of Innovation whereby innovation is subset of creativity i.e. not all creativity can convert into innovation & not all innovation can convert into invention.
The main difference between Creativity and Innovation is as Professor Han said that Creativity refers to the capability to conceive & generate original ideas (conceptual), whereas Innovation is the capability to transform the ideas into application (usage) / implementation of something new (actionable).
I agree with the poster presented by Dr. Mohammad Hamad Al-khresheh, that creativity is thinking up novel things. As such, many persons ,including children, can be creative. Some children are good at inventing stories specially when they are in trouble! The real challenge is "innovation" which means the application of knowledge in doing new things which may result in a product or a service or a commercial venture that has never been done before. What industrial firms or organizations need are innovative persons in the first place. However this is not the scale that is applied, in our region, for appointments or retention of jobs. There are universities whose administrations are good at retiring capable persons while keeping "average or below average" persons because these belong to certain families in particular towns with specific affliations.
Co-creation Is Today's Most Accepted Model For Innovation!Good reading follows! "...This evolving model needs several new ways of managing the creative chain. There are several unanswered questions. We will need to figure out how to keep the large and diverse set of participants engaged, how to share the risks and value of innovation, how to manage complexity of this system without laying out too many constraints, and how to manage flow of information and activity across the boundaries where the degree of trust is yet to be established."
If you understand creation as mental pulse to start an action, creation must be the first step, the idea, the motivation. During the performance of the innovation it´s possible that you go round, new creation, new idea, check, new creation etc. But I´m convinced, this circle must start with creation as stimulating mental act.
If you understand creation as performing a special action in order to fabricate something, then creation is the working process and not the first impulse.
Innovation is just producing a new thing. It may be complicated, but it is producing. It follows the idea of the product.
Dear Hanno. Very simple. If you want to innovate "something" this "something" should exist before; in other words has to be created first by somebody else or by yourself. You could innovate something if this something already exists or has been created before by somebody. else,
A practical example. Innovation in computers to increase the speed of the processor without increasing the heat. You can do that if you have the computer and the processor on which you are going to make the mentioned innovation.
Dear Ali Abdil. It is a point to a good discussion: which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, of course that is creative is more likely to innovate (in research, teaching and also on the assistance). However, some people can be innovative without necessarily having creativity. Someona change an education system based on need, without being something worthy to call "creativity".
Dear friend Ljubomir, sorry, I only read this right now... very complete, very interesting, vey phylosophic and scientific. I like this I saw at the link:
The Difference between Creativity and Innovation.
A closer look at the Latin origins of the two words would help to throw some more lights on the differences. Creative comes from the Latin creâre (to cause to exist) the ability to make something exist. On the other hand Innovate comes from the latin word innovare (to renew, alter) from novus ‘new’.
Of course, both creation and innovation are similar, but different in their roots. And this can lead to a more distant light: which came first, the chicken or the egg? And we follow the theory of creationism or evolutionism? There is much to discuss ... but my simple opinion, the more I research, the more I have God in my explanations! Big hug ....
In the operations area, much of the innovations and cost savings that could be achieved have already been achieved. It’s not enough to make a difference on product quality or delivery readiness or production scale. It’s important to innovate in areas where our competition does not act
Creation is our birth right .It depends on individual in which practice he want to make his life.It is for us in which mode we want to practice our life .As we should be an architecture of our life & if we have this will we can achieved what will desire & in this line our life can be created .
With this creation & innovation both should a basic end of life & as such we can not make a water tide compartment .
Creation brings an inspiration & this inspiration inspires us to carry out our action ,processing for innovation .
In our life we have to carry out our plan with our contemplation to our need innovating our new requirement of our life. Life is a running process very often it can be a mixture of cry & happiness but if we have change our mind in creative process inspires us for innovating a balance of mind which may certainly helps us to have a far reaching solution of our life .
Creation is the foundation of innovation. Creation is the idea or capability of something new or original, but innovation is implementing and putting the idea into practice. There might be a lot of creative ideas that may be left without innovating them.
Creation, being God's spark,is the driving force of innovation. This interesting article is devoted to the "evolution of innovation concepts, aspects and types"
Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things. In other words, it’s no use sitting around dreaming up fantastic ideas unless you’re prepared to do the hard work of making things happen. Levitt expands on this theme in an entertaining tirade in the Harvard Business Review:
"Creativity is not the miraculous road to business growth and affluence that is so abundantly claimed these days… Those who extol the liberating virtues of corporate creativity… tend to confuse the getting of ideas with their implementation – that is, confuse creativity in the abstract with practical innovation"
(Theodore Levitt, ‘Creativity Is Not Enough’ (1963))
Creativity comes first and Creative ideas are the base for innovation. In fact, not all creative ideas leads to innovation
Creativity is about coming up with the big idea. Innovation is about implementation of the idea.
Shawn Hunter, author of "Out Think: How Innovative Leaders Drive Exceptional Outcomes," (Wiley, 2013) defines creativity as the capability or act of conceiving something original or unusual, while innovation is the implementation or creation of something new that has realized value to others.
"Creativity isn't necessarily innovation," Hunter told Business News Daily. "If you have a brainstorm meeting and dream up dozens of new ideas then you have displayed creativity, but there is no innovation until something gets implemented."
Imagination + Creativity + Empathy + Innovation = Value Creation
" Value is user defined. A company only prospers if it provides products or services people value and are willing to pay for. Innovation is key to business growth, provided it is something customers actually want. That’s why empathy —understanding deep human needs — is central to creating meaningful and desirable innovation...
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. In a business context, your idea must be appropriate and useful. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, and then producing. If you have ideas, but don’t act on them, you are imaginative but not creative. Innovation is the implementation of a new or significantly improved product, service or process that creates value for business, government or society..."
Why Rapid Learning Cycles Are The Engine of Innovation?!
"A rapid learning cycle is a synchronized set of problem solving activities to manage risk, eliminate uncertainty and capture knowledge before key decisions need to be made in a product development program.
Through a lot of experimentation, we’ve learned that Rapid Learning Cycles help avoid a lot of the problems that established companies have when they try to innovate. They help the Innovation Teams understand what they need to learn in order to mature a technology to the point where it’s ready to release with the company’s reputation behind it, and provide structured time frames that prevent innovators from getting thrown off-course by shifting priorities and the needs of the current business. When your Innovation Process combines structure, agility, the ability to solve problems and the ability to know what problems to solve, then you have an engine to drive the most disruptive innovation over all the hurdles that the status quo puts in your way...
In an established company where survival is not at stake in any one innovation’s success or failure, the Innovation Process needs an engine to pull its best ideas through to the market. It’s hard to do something new, and passion only carries you so far. All that passion doesn’t guarantee that the idea is a good one, that the teams are working on the right activities to learn what they need to learn for it to succeed. In innovation, passion is necessary but not sufficient, and that’s where the discipline of Rapid Learning Cycles takes over.
People have had a lot of great ideas that never made it to the starting gate, because they, or their organizations lacked the discipline to invest the time and resources into developing the ideas enough to effectively evaluate them. Companies get stuck in the “innovator’s dilemma” where their most profitable products are also the ones most vulnerable to obsolescence - and yet it is so hard to pull money away from the goose laying the golden eggs. It helps - a lot - to give an innovation team a framework to help them structure their work - that is flexible enough to allow for their creativity and passion, and yet disciplined enough to drive them forward towards a conclusion. Rapid Learning Cycles provide the structure to get the work of Innovation done despite competing demands, and pulls out the best ideas by helping teams fail fast to learn fast..."
To me creation / creativity is an ability to generate a new / original idea. Innovation is the commercialization / execution / delivery of something new based on the new / original idea. Hence, creation / creativity should come first. There is another term some people use frequently i.e. invention whereby invention can be 1 of the outcomes of innovation. Other outcomes of innovation include innovative processes, new product sales, productivity gained etc.
Develop innovative solutions to real-world environmental problems and creating new business opportunities such as the clean-tech community, environmental start-ups, the public sector, as well as corporate environmental strategists on themes include water, energy, green building, and transportation
Creativity is contagious. Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things. Creative is the place where no one else never been. Innovation is generally considered to be the result of a process that brings together various new ideas in a way that they have an impact on society. In my opinion Creation is come first.
Creativity is the ability to think and act in ways that are new and novel. In our minds, there are two kinds of creativity, innovation and invention. Innovation is thinking creatively about something that already exists (e.g., the tape recorder, Walkman, and CD player are all innovations on the phonograph). Invention is creating something that did not exist before (e.g. the phonograph).
WELCOME TO THE MOST INNOVATIVE AGE IN HUMAN HISTORY!
"For the last seven years, Thomson Reuters has been tracking The State of Innovation across 12 bellwether technology areas to provide a benchmark for worldwide levels of innovative activity among multinational corporations, universities, government agencies and research institutions. We do it by analyzing global intellectual property data. The study also tracks global scientific literature publications as a window into the scientific and scholarly research that typically precedes discovery and the protection of innovation rights.
This year, we found that overall levels of innovation have grown at a record pace, with global patent volume growing at an annualized rate of 13.7 percent year-over-year. While the gains were driven primarily by three sectors – Medical Devices (up 27 percent), Home Appliances (up 21 percent), and Aerospace & Defense (up 15 percent) – virtually every category in the study, with the exception of Biotechology, saw gains this year...
...However, the sheer scale of this growth across virtually every industry group in the study suggests something more than just zealous intellectual property protection. We have indeed entered into a point in human history where innovation is, above all else, the currency on which companies, universities, government agencies and entire nations thrive. We look forward to seeing what’s possible as this trend continues."
Intelligent communities and cities belong to an emerging movement targeting the creation of environments that improve cognitive skills and abilities to learn and innovate.
The question posed in the headline has been debated by many over the years. Few have dared to commit their conversations on the topic to writing. That’s likely because folks who write up early findings on a new area or approach to a scientific study, and are later proven incorrect, often have difficulty regaining their prior ground. However, they do push the state of thinking ahead, albeit without reward.
Almost without exception, discussions about invention and innovation that have taken place in my circles over a long period of time have clearly concluded that innovation comes first: Invention follows innovation. Don’t you agree? (Machine Design’s readership is quite sophisticated and is involved with both subjects. Should you be so inclined, the editorial staff would welcome your thoughts.)
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines invention as “a product of the imagination; device/contrivance/process originated after study and experiment.” Innovation is defined as “the introduction of something new; a new idea/method/device.”
