If the engine is run with alcohol, aldehydes are also to be checked. These aldehydes arecarcinogenic in nature and once they are inhaled, cause severe headache and vomiting sensation.[1–3]. Aldehyde vapors effects on human health include irritation of eye, throat, nose, asthma, pulmonary function. Thresholds for sensory irritation determined by controlled exposure studies, arereported as 0.6-1.2 mg/m3 [0.5-1.0 ppm] (formaldehyde) and 90 mg/m3 [50 ppm] (acetaldehyde) [4].These levels are substantially higher than the generally reported ambient air concentrations of thesevapors Aldehydes are partially oxygenated organic compounds containing carbonyl group. Analdehyde functional group consists of a carbon atom bonded to a hydrogen atom double-bonded to anoxygen atom (O=CH–). Control of aldehyde emissions in SI engines was not sufficiently reported in literature. Hence control of these emissions is immediate and an urgent task.
It fully agrees with Mr. Maddali that engine running with alcohol blend or purely E100 produces aldehyde in its emission. It is one of pollutants which has not yet been much focused on and still been insufficient report to analyse/profile. Since alcohol blend or pure alcohol fuel is more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels, emission of its combustion products must be carefully and seriously considered. Different chemical reactants in combustion reaction give different product yields.
