Can anyone explain the following experimental results:

Graphene can be stretched elastically up to 20%; it has high brittleness (like glass), if deformation exceeds 20% [Science 324, 1530-1534(2009)].

Where can I find quantitative explanation of that experimental observation? Explanation in common words seems not interesting, because there is intrigue to find a method to calculate the mechanical properties of a few atoms which form nanostructure. I would be grateful for help.
