Dental implant dimensions are difficult to generalize. It used to be that 3.75 to 4.2 mm diameter was considered to be the standard diameter of implant. so let's just take diameter only, a circumference of a 3.75 mm diameter implant would be 11.78 whereas a 4.2 mm diameter would be a circumference of 13.19. So this means just on the basis of circumference you have a 12% difference from one manufacturer to another. In this assumes that 3.75 is the least of the standard dimensions and 4.2 is the most. Those statements are not true however because some of these standard implants are less than 3.75 mm and some are more than 4.2 mm.

We've had the discussion of short implants. There is no consensus on what is short. I'll try to summarize it very quickly here. In 1985 a short implant was 7 mm in length but this considered the total length of the implant from the top of the restorative surface to the apex of the implant. The reality however was that the 7 mm implant was not expected to have all 7 mm Osseo integrate. The coronal restorative collar was more than 1.0 mm in height so this means that the short implant was less than 6 mm in height. Okay are you confused yet? What if another company measures its implants from the apex of the implant to the coronal aspect of the implant to which you would assume Osseo integration would occur but then had a restorative collar on top of this. And of course this happened with an 8 mm implant but the 8 mm implant was actually 10.8 mm tall, 2.8 mm of the height that the implant was ignored relative to what the manufacturer would describe as the height of the implant. It actually had two different heights one had a collar height of 1.8 mm and the other had a collar height of 2.8 mm.

So when you're trying to simply look at the websites of the dental implant manufacturers you're going to get quite confused because the websites do not necessarily measure from the same starting point and end point.

The problem is that the manufacturer makes a decision as to which diameter and length they are going to identify. A 7 mm implant length from one company could actually be shorter relative to the surface that we hope will Osseo integrate then would a 6 mm implant from another company because there are six has 6 mm of restorative service whereas the other companies seven has less than 6 mm of restorative surface. Are you confused now?

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? There are Shakespearean scholars who would suggest that Shakespeare, that person who performed in the Globe theater, may not have been that person who is recognized as the greatest playwright ever. We will never find out will we. I guess the reason for bringing this in is that we can say that confusion is almost certain to exist. Whether it happens with playwrights or with implant dimensions, we just don't seem to be able to create standards that are universally accepted.

Dental implant sizes are labeled on the packages sent by the manufacturer. Standard implant sizes range from 4 to 4.3mm diameter in size, for length of implants the most often used lengths are 10mm,11mm and 11.5mm. These are considered standard lengths. For grades of implants you would have to contact the major dental implant companies or look at their websites. The major companies are Straumann, Noble biocare, Biomet 31 and Implant direct. The surfaces of implants vary, most are titanium or titanium alloy. The manufacturing companies have information on about their implant surfaces and it is readily available on their websites.

Variation of the diameter of standard implants between 3.25 and 4.5 mm does not seem to influence the primary stability in trabecular bone specimen. Differences between experimental and computational results may be due to the simplification used when modeling.

The actual dimension of the dental implant are irrelevant, the more relevant question is why are you placing the implant? If the reasons are for functions and esthetics, then the relevant parameters should be 1. do we have stability given the boen quantity and quality. 2, Do we have enough occlusal clearance for the abutment and crown? 3. does the depth of the implant/abutment position submerged enough relative to the gingival margin. These "prosthetic" parameters are better evaluated at the time of surgical placement of the device rather than at prosthetic phases.
