I have developed a database of members of our organisation; these members are drawn from about 150 countries around the world and are mostly from academia or para-academic professions (e.g. librarians etc.). I've been able to do a per capita analysis compared to total country population but I'd be keen to see what our membership in each country is compared to the total number of academics/research students (i.e. the size of the academic population).
Does anyone know of one place where I can find data on the size of the academic population OR number of academics/research students per country? I'd prefer not to have to trawl through reports from each of the 150-odd countries individually!
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!
Daniel - Without having examined the sites, my experience is that compiled data by country are found in international organizations such as the World Bank, UN organizations, OCDE or the European Union. As you are looking for education, try Unesco and OCDE first.

For Australia - you might wish to look at the Australian Research Council and the Australian National Library! also, the Australian Bureau of Statistics might have some general figures and numbers... Good luck!

I'm afraid I never found a complete source for the data I was looking for - while I found several sources for individual countries, I didn't find a central source for all nations. I ended up performing my analysis a different way. I briefly looked at FAPESP, as Heitor suggested, but unfortunately my Portuguese isn't up to scratch.
