Finding residual cancer cells at the site of injection typically means that you've not succeeded in hitting the vessel on the first try. For example, if you haven't got the needle into the tail vein on the first try and inject some material into the surrounding tissue, these cells might continue growing during the experiment. It'll be more obvious if you're using bioluminescent imaging!
