The term moral distress has been widely used in referring to occupational moral distress particularly in the profession of nursing. More recently, it has been examined in relation to other members of the medical profession such as surgeons. Moral injury has been the focus of empirical interest particularly since 2009, mainly in reference to military/veterans' experiences but it also has recently been applied to the medical profession to account for what has been labelled compassion fatigue. My question is, when does moral distress become moral injury? What are the differences between moral distress and moral injury? Is moral injury the result of cumulative exposure to moral distress?
