A phage is not a cell. Normally it just has a protein shell encapsulates nucleic acid. So what will happen, after a phage 'dies' or 'is inactive'? Will the particle still keep its intact structure? Or the protein coat will be destroyed, and releasing nucleic acid?

In another word, if a phage has intact structure, can we say it is active or 'alive'? otherwise, we consider it as 'inactive' or 'died'?
