I am looking for someone who worked with Sub X clearing agent and CLEARENE (made by Leica) and can tell my 1) which is better (less harmful to health and gives better histological slides) and 2) which is compatible with Leica CV Ultra?

We ONLY use 'safe' reagents in our histology lab. For 'xylene substitute', we use a 'citrus rind extract' (d-limonene), equivalent to your 'Clearene' product. We purchase direct from manufacturer (there are many, see Amazon.com), thus obtaining much lower cost per liter. SubX is a petroleum distillate (contains naptha, toxic). When using d-limonene, take heated paraffin-section slides directly to d-limonene (even better, we pre-warm our d-limonene), and this will help to ensure complete dewaxing, prior to the remainder of your staining process.
If the specimens is hard or thick as the skin of buffalo , the use of cedar wood oil as clearing agent is better and safe and the tissue stay for long time without any problem. this will be followed by xylene just for 2-4 minutes only ... my regards
