As dedicated researchers we all try to contribute to the advancement of our discipline. Often the work can be routine, but occasionally there are some real highlights. Can you please share your most exciting research highlights?
To give you an example from our research in inorganic chemistry, we have recently been able to verify the longest sulfur chain in the world with no less than 12 sulfur atoms in a row. The paper is available as public full text on RG.

Working on a research project with my senior students and watching them growing professionally.
My first research project getting published was definitely so exciting.
Establishment of chemical, microbiology, textile and physical engineering testing laboratories set-up and their Accreditation on basis of ISO/IEC-17025.
To me, the greatest achievement so far has been to prove the authorship of one quite important novel written in the Czech language. A colleague of mine has developed a new method of authorship attribution, and we applied it to the book in question. If you wish to check it out, the paper is at RG ("The Romantic Clash...").

it is difficult for me to nominate the 'most exciting' research achievement due to the fact that I have done research work in very different projects and a fair decision in this respect is not really possible.
Therefore will choose one paper and some patents from different application fields which bear tricky realizations.

several years ago I was chairman of a congress in which, a person of high scientific stature belonging to the specific research sector to which I belong, gave me "unexpected" public congratulations for the research I was carrying out.
It wasn't a "physical" or cash prize, but as I am a rather private person, I was very impressed and happy.

The most exciting achievement of the research is when your work is incorporated in practice by your peer groups.
Dear Readers of this thread, please allow me to tell you another personal experience which I found quite rewarding. As synthetic chemists, we do what is often called "basic research". More than 30 years ago we discovered a new class of chemical compounds which are called "lanthanide amidinates". For many years they remained some kind of "laboratory curiosities". It was the more surprisining that in the following year researchers around the world discovered that they can be used as promising catalysts and as precursors for new materials.
