I am planning in designing a wind farm in Ethiopia and I wanted for sure how to select the place, the turbine sittings (about 1.5 mw each) and the number of turbines, type of turbines and the total out put of electric power. It is possible to have images from satellite and after having these images you can analyze it by using image processing tools. I recommend you that you can use MATHLAB. Good luck.
Geographic Information systems (GIS) allow to identify regions in large areas that meet the requirements for the installations of wind turbines. GIS analyse all spatial natural and anthropological constraints in order to exclude unsuitable areas and to also route the transmission line to dispatch the energy generation to the existing power grid. In you case I guess, important spatial features are the slope of the terrain, the proximity to the road (for the transportation of equipment) and to the power grid.
In GIS you can add also wind speed maps in order to select/rank regions with good wind resource that meet the requirements of the features mentioned above. Some wind speed maps are available in internet or can be generated using GIS. Such geoprocesses are possible using open source software such as QGIS with some coding in Python or R language. The data necessary for site viability analysis can be found in internet for free (Africa included).
For micrositing, at the moment no GIS based software is commercially available for the optimization of the Wind Turbines placement, but with GIS you can calculate the electricity generation of any wind turbine integrating the power curve.
