I recently met with an senior executive of a Water delivery company. #1 concern was the inability to locate leakage in underground mains pipes. Typically 40% of water is lost between source and delivery to end user. Water Company is responsible for maintenance 100's km of underground pipes. Any suggestions? Potential for academic research or testing of solutions. Understand that this is a world wide problem.

Possibly some geophysical tools could work, i.e., ground penetrating radar, or side looking radar. Would consult with geophysical company and see what they suggest. Possibly, you've thought of this. Chas
It is hard to assess the condition of the pipe from the outside. Robust in-line drones with ultrasound defectoscopes can do the trick. The same technology is used for oil-pipe inspection. Another possible solution is to put the control cables & sensor grids around the pipes, creating self-diagnostics structure.
