We have a large yeast strain collection and a plasmid collection. What software are people using to keep their collections organized and searchable? We want to be able to search auxotrophic markers in yeast, mating types and have any plasmids in the yeast linked to the plasmid collection. The plasmid collection needs to be searchable by plasmid name, restriction sites used for cloning, whether it is sequence-verified, etc. Thanks.
In our lab we use FileMaker, for which our university has a good offer.
In FileMaker, you can personalize your databases to your needs, add fields for markers, restriction sites...

The PC software StrainControl, which handle strains, plasmids, oligos, chemicals, inventories etc... is now also available as a free version (2015/05). Strongly recommend this to wet-lab people. Compatible with Dropbox or sharing the database on a computer network. A really good function is that you can rename every single field and columns, which allows you to customize StrainControl to whatever your lab needs.

After many years in the lab, I know for sure that spreadsheets are hard to keep updated.
