I asked if isopropyl alchohol could be used in place of ethanol in an earlier posted question and it seems that neither is suitable to dissolve sucralfate. I will be making a solution that is to be applied topically and would like to know what should be used to dissolve sucralfate. There are many patents available to read by just doing a google patent search that describe using a topical sucralfate solution, so i know it is possible and apparantly safe! Thank you.

Sucralfate is not very soluble in many solvents. It does dissolve in dilute acid or base. (It is soluble in stomach acid.) It is also soluble in sodium chloride solutions.
You probably already saw www.patentgenius.com/patent/5618798.html, Most topical uses appear to be made with suspensions.
However, Sujitha Parimala in the International Journal of Innovative Pharmaceutical Research (see attached) reported that 500 mg of sucralfate was mixed with some "diluent" (water:methanol, 70:30, v:v). after was solubilized with sonication. (I am not sure that I believe that it will stay dissolved in this solution but in the paper, once in solution it is further diluted. The final concentration is 5 mg/ml. So 1 gram of sucralfate would be in 200 mL of diluent. That may be more dilute than you want.
You can also see that Ahmed et al (http://ijpsr.com/bft-article/stability-indicating-method-development-and-validation-of-sucralfate-and-oxetacaine-in-bulk-and-marketed-formulation-by-rp-hplc/?view=fulltext) dissolved sucralfate in 100 mM NaOH. Their final solution is 10 mg/ml (although they incorrectly state that it is 10,000 mg/ml in the paper)..

Thank you joe, but I am looking for something that is non harmful to the skin. I think lye and stomach acid is too harsh.
i agree that both lye and stomach acid are potentially harmful to skin. But I also noted that sodium chloride is also useful for solubilization.
While sucralfate is not very soluble in pure water, you can titrate the pH up or down to improve solubility. Determine what pH limits are acceptable and use that.
As I mentioned, most people using sucralfate topically do not use a solubilized form--they use a suspension of the drug in an oil or ointment.
Well what would be suitable ingredients in the ointment and how would you make the suspension? Thanks again for the help.
