I think C. Wright Mills provided an answer to this many years ago. I paraphrase him below: It is now the scientist's foremost political and intellectual task - for here the two coincide - to make clear the elements of contemporary uneasiness and indifference. It is because of this task and these demands that the sciences are becoming the common denominator of our cultural period, and the 'scientific' imagination is our most needed quality of mind.

New issues may emerge that demand new tools for research and thinking, but by and large, it is the responsibilty of scientists to furnish data for resolving the key concerns of all societies. My key concern has always been that it is politics rather than evidence that drives tbe bulk of policies.

I think the strong side of humanities has always been to point out connections between the concrete and the abstract - or, between the local and the global. Therefore, in my opinion, humanities and social sciences are the academic disciplines that are most fit to study issues that transcend "old" boundaries. The discussion on methodological nationalism, provincializing Europe and so on shows that nicely.

I think the central role of the human sciences as a disciplinary bodyis to employ the element of interdisciplinary and comparative knowledge to resolve any such issues. I have long argued for the recognition of a multidisciplinary approach both in terms of content knowledge and procedural knowledge in resolving many societal and educational issues.

Your are very correct dear Gordon, interdisciplinary approach is vital to resolve such global issues.

Local experience with local conditions have more value than the contents of huge libraries writing about other conditions. Thus, when tribes live for hundreds of years in the same place, they should be able to cope better with the local environmental conditions than people coming from abroad, whatever their scientific background, or not?

The next question is concerned with the quality of life: when tribes live for hundreds of years in the same place, they should be able to cope with the local environmental conditions, but are they satisfied with the living conditions? Can science help to improve living conditions?

The globalisation of neo-liberalism does not respect the local cultures. It includes an element of domination of the cultures of strong powers. In order that globalisation tkes a positive form we need a international constitution, and an international force to support it.Otherwise the wishes of Kamal will remain  wishes!

Protecting the human rights in a globalized  world is one of the main tasks for human science! In a lighter vein rather epigrammatically, humanities may help in teaching and researching, how poor and primitive people survive with little food and instructing to eat little and survive.

The development of multi-level governance seems to be the most emergent aspect of public administration.  Efforts by a single entity such as the local jurisdiction can certainly bring forth problems to higher government authorities (state, regional, national) who more than likely control the purse strings.  In order to address any systemic problem, all levels and community participation must be evident so that a viable, funded solution may come to the forefront.  Without community participation contact with local civic leaders bringing the information up the hierarchy in order to  gain momentum and funding and then in position to liaison for action and implementation back down again, there is little hope that problems will be addressed. Science can inform, people can use data to get a firmer grasp on information, and together, all must communicate within their realm to produce solutions that cannot normally be achieved by a single approach.  

I look at it from another side. The global issues can affect the local issues. With considerable strides in technology, social media and other web-based and mobile forms of communication enable one to reach millions at very low cost. Local issues are thus able to get traction and be elevated to the global scale quite rapidly.

At the same time, I think there is a big role on scholars to deal with the contemporary issues, which have local, regional as well as global implications. As dear Kamal said that we should encourage building bridges instead of walls between different cultures and communities.

Your first response is highly commendable. Yes, science should explore the ways to better life conditions of tribes instead of of uprooting them from their original habitats. In search of resources, habitats of tribes are destroyed and they have to migrate to nearby cities where their (folk) culture, first is polluted, then annihilated by so-called urban culture be it language, art, music, dance or way of living. Globalisation has enhanced this process. But in such a situation, view expressed by Costas takes an added significance for preservation (not conservation) of habitat and culture of primitive people.

If I understand well, you ask what is the role of human science. I hope that under "human science" you indicate not only the so-called 'hard science' , but also and perhaps even especially Humanities and Social Sciences.

Social science has a direct connection with human beings, whereas humanities expresses its relation to people, fauna and flora.

scientific research, combined with Humanities and Social Science, has a direct impact on both the latter, because Humanities and Social Sciences alone are usually unable to solve the pending question in life.

So, the role will be one of collaboration between all these aforesaid sciences without any exclusion. In such a case, they will be able to help in solving problems that are local, regional and even global, because what once was regional has become problems that affect the entire globe.

The way to do this is by education. Not the kind of going through the compulsory curriculum to get a diploma, after one may think that one knows what it is all about. No, my type of education takes an enormous amount of time and patience and consists in not only repeating what a teacher has preached, but in finding alternative solutions to situations whereby you must think outside of the box.

In such global collaborations, one can touch one-another on an equal basis and if that takes place we could live in a better world by understanding each other better. If we move around in our own small world, nothing of all this will ever happen.

Cooperation, sharing knowledge and cultures, support of education quality  as none educated people will be lost in this era of technology, less none useful economic competition, and human rights respects are the pillars of a good regulation of local, regional and global human progress with respect of specificity of each communauty. Dear Fairouz, if I understand you well, your primary question is "The challenging question [is} how" which is as important as determining what the role is. Well, you have no doubt heard of the SESAME synchrotron Radiation project that is developing--as we speak--in Allan, Jordan. 

In my case, I could have sat at home and do my things of which I have plenty, but, on the moment I was asked to lecture at Amman under the auspices of the newly_under_construction SESAME project together with the IAEA in  Vienna. Well when I arrived from Israel I suddenly was together with eighty scientists from Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine and it took exactly a single day and my lecture on the Trans-disciplinary approach applied to the Dead Sea scrolls to forget all borders and points that divide us.

Some years before that, I had also lectured at the University of az-Zarqa whose final report was published some years ago in which also I have my paper on the Mudayna shrine with Edomite and Ammonite pottery by instrumental neutron activation analysis.

Since then, I have several times been back in Amman/Allan and we have become friends, without ever talking about anything that divides us. Instead, we have made links what to do with the rich remains of our common CH in the framework of SESAME.

You also mentioned "power money ships" and if I understand that well then you probably meant of how can we fight against these money powers. Well, taking the example of SESAME, countries like Israel, Jordan, Cyprus have paid 5 million USD to contribute, whereas also Iran and Egypt have promised similar sums. This is the collaboration about I was talking in my previous answer and I can tell you and everybody watching this discussion that this business and going-about will win in the long run.

I think that each collaborative project could be useful and successful. I think, everyone should try to increase his/her knowledge to cope with daily contemporary issues because awareness and capacity of a person to handle that particular situation can only be the possible solution at local scale. Later on, if approved; should be recommended to include in national agenda.

Human nature is basically the same everywhere. As such, some emergent issues relating to humans are likely to affect all, locally as well as globally, almost the same way, though not without some peculiarities due to cultural, psychological, economic and behavioural diversities, among others. Being concerned with human activities, behaviours, social and cultural constructs, human science should focus on strategies human beings should put up in dealing with emergent issue, using a combination of cultural, psychological, contextualised and philosophical approaches. In doing this, greater attention should be given to the capacity of humans to adapt to, modify and transform their environments to their own advantages. Human science should help humans to expand their horizon in understanding and relating to their diverse environments and experiences, and be able to proffer solutions for emergent issues. A case in hand is the COVID-19 Pandemic.
