I have a global average that roughly estimates 40.000 km subduction of 500 m sediment thickness at a convergence rate of 5 cm/year. Does someone know if there is there a publication that estimates the amount of sediments subducted in the individual subduction zones with better estimates regarding sediment thickness and convergence rate?
It appears impossible, but roughly estimation can done by knowing the length and rate of subduction between plates in global tectonic map. and put a roughly estimation of the thickness of subducted sediments over oceanic crust, then you can give a rourghly estimation. it is not true of course without the geophysical toal to detect the actual thicknes of strata at these different zones of subduction worldwide. but finally you will obtain a result on the quantity of these sediments.
Thank you guys. But shouldn't the rate of sediment subduction be independent from the convergence rate? Like, when the convergence rate is slow, there is just a thicker sediment sequence subducting as there was more time for pile-up of layers. So in that case it practicaly comes down to weathering and sedimentation rates into the ocean (beyond the shelf) and the presence of a trench.
