Food web structure affects the survival of functional groups and ecosystem functions, such as decomposition or the production of fine particulate organic matter. Disruption of one level will have consequences for other levels. For example, with a decrease in prey animals, predator animals will be forced to leave their natural habitat since they no longer find sufficient animals to ensure their survival :)
To prevent the destruction of our environment, the balance among the number of components in a food chain is extremely necessary.
If a particular segment of the components of a food chain either decreases or increases then the upper or lower components will also decrease or increase.
This will affect the consumption rate of our environmental resources and it will ultimately cause a environmental disbalance among the various components of the ecosystem.
