Generally speaking, you don't need to publish any papers in order to obtain a PhD as you are being judged on your thesis and viva. However, at least having some papers submitted to journals will strengthen your position in a viva.

There is a rule of thumb that three academic papers correspond to a PhD but this is very broad and depends upon a lot of other factors. You should try to ensure that your papers form a coherent body of research.

Working with co-authors is another challenge: I would suggest the ideal number of co-authors is ONE. If you are not the lead author then it will obviously count for less. Some ideas are sadly stolen and credit is sometimes not given to PhD students where it is due.

In my country, there is no written rule regarding that, in most universities. I was not statutorily mandated to have my work published before my Ph.D was awarded; even though I already had a paper published from my thesis. Publications arising from your Ph.D thesis will usually contain your name and that/those of your supervisors(s), only. There is also no space for usage of M.Sc thesis towards the acquisition of a Ph.D.

Dear Kassu, The requirement for graduation  towards a Phd degree degree varies from university to university. The experience from the university I am currently studying states that you should have atleast two SCI indexed papers with  B grade as first author ( usually having IF > 2.5 - 3.00 as decided by china academy of sciences), or one high quality SCI indexed paper with A grade as first author ( usually having IF > 4.00 as decided by china academy of sciences) before appearing to a PhD defense. However, Non- SCI indexed papers don't count. Furthermore, papers in which you have co authored with others where you are not the lead author also don't count for the fulfillment of the PhD degree requirement.

There is no fixed rule on how many publications are required before PhD graduation because this varies from university to university.  E.g. some universities impose 2 papers must be published in ISI indexed journals before PhD graduation whereas some universities do not impose such ruling at all.  However, there are also some universities that don't impose such ruling but strongly encourage their PhD students to publish.  Because publishing papers before PhD graduation can help achieve the following benefits:

Do your best to publish on your own based on the 3 benefits mentioned above.  If you need to co-author with others, perhaps you can co-author with your thesis supervisor / adviser (because s/he can understand your research topic better & can speed up the completion of the article).  If you need to co-author with other colleagues, perhaps you should try to become the 1st author among others.

This depends on the university and/or the type of PhD one is doing. Are you doing PhD by publication or the type you have to present a monograph? PhD by publication requires that students contribute to books, book chapters and/or journal articles before they graduate. It wasn't compulsory for me to have my work published before I graduated, although I published some papers.

I know few colleagues who did PhD from UK, without any publication in 90s. In Pakistan Universities require 3 Publications with some impact factor. MSc thesis is not regarded as publication.

In Russia the number of publications for those who are working on PhD is usually 5. It does not matter whether is it an Article or a Conference Paper; as well s whether was it written alone or with a team of co-workers. 

India, 1 publication is necessary.

In Mexico, atleast one original article as first author. Review articles are not considered for PhD.
