I have an ancient plasmid (pHN) which I've been told works beautifully in Xa90 cells, and so far I've not been successful in getting it to work in the strains we use at our facility.
How could I get my hands on fresh Xa90 cells (in Germany)? They seem not to be available commercially. Can anyone think of an equivalent strain which is known to have similar properties? Does anyone know about the origins and the ancestorship of the Xa90 strain?
Sorry, I do not have that strain available also, but why don't you just subclone the ORF of your protein in a standard IPTG inducible plasmid and express it in some BL21 derivative? Maybe one of these two papers may help you with the Xa90 bugs, they describe in some detail how they were used and from whom they got them:

Thank you for your reply. There are actually plenty of these types of references in the literature, and it seems the strain was handed from lab to lab over the years. Nowadays noone seems to work with it anymore. So cloning the insert into another plasmid seems the only way to go!
I have a strain called X90 that I picked up at M.I.T. while a postdoc in Robert Sauer's lab. Its genotype is [ara,
delta(lac-pro), nalA, argE(Am), thi, Rifr, F', (lac+-pro+ lacIq1)]. Seems to be the same as Xa90.
