I am writing me research proposal to find out about teenagers understanding of the ante natal screening in England.
and I don’t know what methodology is supportive, so far phenomonolgy and GT don‘t support my choice to use semi structured interviews to gain insight into what teens actually know, as they aren’t specific to “understanding”. am I missing something?
I think you need to clarify some of the terms that you are using.
First, a paradigm is a broad world view that guides your research, such as using Constructivism to justify your choice of a qualitative approach.
Second, methodology refers to collections of inter-related methods, such as qualitative methodology.
Third, methods are specific techniques for collecting and analyzing data, such as semi-structured interviews.
Since you seem to be near the beginning of your research, you should concentrate on connecting your research goals and your choice of research methods. In particular, why do you think that semi-structured interviews would be an appropriate method for studying this question with this set of participants? How will this type of data serve your research purposes?
A lot depends on what you mean by understanding. If it means that it corresponds to some kind of objective fact, you may want to construct or find a survey instrument. This may be a way to check how well the teenagers' understanding corresponds with the professional understanding. If you open your mind to the option that there are several understandings, however, you will get access to some genuinely new insights.
The method you have chosen is an excellent tool for finding out about the teenagers' understandings, provided that you accept that it can be totally different from the professional understanding. In doing this you may have to prepare for having your own preconceptions challenged.
My advice is that you take one step back and make an effort to clarify what understanding may mean in ontological and epistemological terms. Then you may come to find that both phenomenonology and reflexive thematic analysis are applicable frameworks for your project. GT less so, unless you want to focus on the social processes leading to the understandings you want to study.
Daisy Lovis hi! Have you considered FGIs? When I was studying social-emotional learning (SEL) among juveniles it turned out to be the most effective method. Of course right scenario, good tools and an atmosphere of trust were necessary.
