The keyword in your questions is the word effective. Having been a principal for many years and having researched this, published numerous articles, and published a book on your questions, it is imperative that the principal of any school MUST be an instructional leader. Most states have adopted a supervision process, but it most cases, it is ineffective. For instruction to improve, the principal must be an instructional leader and must be in classrooms helping teachers improve their instructional skills. Teachers are starving for assistance and need help. We must remember that student learning is the focus of schools, and it has to start with great teaching. Principals must be available for teachers and must be able to demonstrate what great instruction looks like. Therefore, the principal must be the best teacher in the school. If they are not the best, they will never be able to help those teacher who need to improve their instructional skills. Good, better, best, never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best!
Daisy, the principal MUST be in the classroom working with teachers. Principals must focus on the improvement of instruction, because the better the instruction is, there will also be greater depths of student achievement. Research clearly supports this and if the principal fails to work with teachers instructionally, student learning will not improve. Over the past several years the principal has focused on management and it has caused great problems. Much of this is due to policies that are pasted by state agencies and legislatures and they have no clue about teaching and learning.
