I have posted this not as a question, but to share my results on an optimum/affordable solution to a workstation. Ideally, cluster computing would be the fastest, however, this note is about configuring a common commercially available system for optimum speeds on a simulation. I compared three systems, two older ones and one newly built for optimum performance for COMSOL. Conclusions are that CPU speeds are most important. After 16 cores (2x8 cores on dual core systems) the change due to additional cores become quite small. Memory and bus speeds should be optimised. Running Linux seems to improve speeds quite significantly. File attached with more information and results.
