RG will reflect our personality. It is just an instrument that we can use as it pleases us. For some, a way to learn something. For others, a battlefield.
Your questions are always brilliant and unique. My understanding is like this. As you know, all human beings are social animals. According to their interests and wishes, people associate with those, who feel that, they are credible and comfortable with.
RG is one such forum for research personalities and definitely, we are learning and getting the help from a lot of intellectual personalities around the world. Let's keep this as simple. For some it's professionally helping, for some it's a forum to show their talent, for some to seek advice, for some to learn, for some to know people and so on..
Like a rain, we do not know, where all the water goes and how it gets used. We are all rain water droplets. Intended to do something for some reason for a specific period of time. Involvement in RG is one of the use of a rainwater droplet like us.
In my view it involves all to a certain extent..It involves as you mentioned in the question competitive, collaborative, interactive, exchange of idea . In research gate all these are happening. You can collaborate with researcher with your new idea. You can interact on any subjects and exchange of idea is happening through the request of papers and asking questions. You can also evaluate yourself for the reserach contribution you made in your chosen field of specialisation and compare with your peers if you want. This is really an advantage ofcourse
The answer is in your question. Researchgate is indeed an interactive platform for academics so people with higher level of IQ. In some measure such RG discussions can be inspiring and rewarding. I met on RG a few open minded professors, PhD-s and have access to their excellent scientific work.. There are of course limitations associated with deeply meant professional cooperation started via Researchgate. Is anyone truly satisfied ?
I believe RG is what we make it out to be for ourselves. RG is collaborative, interactive, or competitive, as each one decides how it should be. To someone who has interests in many research areas, it is a wealth of riches waiting to be tapped. Q and A allows me to INTERACT AND LEARN SO MUCH THAT IT'S WORTH THE FEW MINUTES I CAN AFFORD TO SPEND ON IT EACH DAY. Close peers give me personal advice that is invaluable to me. I have also learned a lot about the culture of foreign lands, its peoples and their joys and trials, and this helps me to be thankful for what I have.
I think RG is a good knowledge sharing & learning platform for all researchers, scholars, academicians etc. in the world 24 x 7 through others' Q&A, articles / links uploaded & making one's lonely research journey becomes no longer lonely. Great resources for PhD students vs those days when I had research issues / problems only shared with my supervisor and hoped he would not drop the ball / gave up on me (actually he didn't).
I think that RG could be everthing you mentioned. It depends what you expect of it. For me, it is a place for retreiving new information, place for communicating new ideas, getting opinions, and if possible cricital way of my work... if any of this is done than it has its purpose.
RG will reflect our personality. It is just an instrument that we can use as it pleases us. For some, a way to learn something. For others, a battlefield.
Above experts in various field all are Well Said about RG. In my view RG is a social cum Research network. It is very much useful to doctoral research communities. Mainly RG focus that exchange of innovative ideas to the researchers..........
Sir In my opinion research gate is a wonderful platform for those people who are very much interested in research but not getting chances to do work in a lab for simple reasons . Up to my knowledge many Indian students who are interested in research and dreaming for research are loosing their confidence and going to other professions because of some selfish and corrupted people in national research sector in this regard Research Gate is a great social media for those people get involved in research independently from home one more reason why I appreciate Research gate site is, before joining in research gate it is very difficult to read publications but now I can read full texts directly from scientist's profiles and I can ask questions it is a great gift especially for people like me.Thank you sir.
RG is a virtual social network having many features common among social network sites, like user profiles, messaging (publicly or privately) and finding/following other users with similar interests. However, it is distinct from other social network in the sense that conversation on this site is focused on research aspects. In fact, the site is exclusively designed for researchers and scientists to interact and share their research ideas, experiences, finding, publications, etc. and to raise and reply questions. RG followers can write short reviews on peer-reviewed articles. The web-forum RG is integrative and collaborative that is meant for exchange e of opinion, thoughts and research findings. It can be competitive too. I agree with Prof Arup that Members have to decide, how this forum can be beneficially utilized in the interest of research and researcher.
I agree with all and in sum as Yogesh:... interact and share their research ideas, experiences, finding, publications, etc. and to raise and reply questions. RG followers can write short reviews on peer-reviewed articles....
Good question. So, my opinion: the RG is a kind of mixture of all these.
At first: competitive, since all parameters of scientific measurement (sciemtrometria) is a kind of competition like RG score, citation, impact factor, number of profile views and views of scientific papers as well. So, my very personal opinion: competitive let's say in 50 percent (?).
Collaborative. Yes, at least collaborative as an intention of the hosts of RG. However, according to my personal experience, sligthly collaborative: since I received one offer for collaboration. It is also, very subjective viewpoint. I would say in 5 percent.
Interactive, yes definitely interactive: I received and also set numerous scientific paper to help and suppoirt the projekts of other colleagues. Also I received so manxy good answers for my scientific issues and questions and I was happy to help my fellows in this site. Let's say in 45 percent (?)
And finally: Ispecial strength of this site is creating, establishing a kind of community which is independent of nations or even of fields of research, a kind of indisciplinary community.
Researchgate is one of the best and useful platform like a research supervisor for upcoming student like me to know new things by questioning and discussion with great scientist. All the great personalities were responding very well. We can update regularly by following new publications.
Finally, I feel that it was a wonderful chance to learn new thins by using wonderful personalities here.
Many more thanks to Researchgate founders and the great personalities those who are responding and encouraging a student like me...
Very nicely you have explained the use of RG as collaborative, interactive, exchange of idea, and learning from RG members. This is the real use of RG.
As research scholar, you can use RG very constructively by using little time. You may concentrate much related to your research work. You can take tips from senior RG members from your field.
I like that RG is irrespective of state, country, religion and so on, as Abhijit just pointed out, a place where nobody should be judged...the platform is absolutely collaborative and i spend lot of time in studying here.
An excellent web-forum for reaching out galaxy of researchers of diverse discipline and out reaching one's research contributions to scientific community through efficient sharing.
