I recently came across an assignment to write a essay based on a question. I have never had these kinds of essay before and have no idea how to start off.
Question:
How will someone (an author from specific research article) evaluate these readings? (several articles)
ex.
How will Ellias et al. evaluate these research articles?
I was wondering if anyone know what kind of essay is this.
Jing - it sounds like you are being asked to account for the process of a researcher/author who is conducting a narrative/systematic/integrative/scoping review of the existing study literature. This involves a critical search of and appraisal of a corpus of 'key' existing research literature.
it sounds like a critical thinking essay, because you need to analyze the articles and compare and contrast Ellias with the others.

For me, this would seem to be an essay requiring you to understand the theoretical perspective and point of view of a particular reviewer. As Michael indicates, this requires you to 'think critically' about Ellias et al's 'world view', values and preferred methodologies. But it also requires empathy - putting yourself in the shoes of another. It is an assignment that might well 'scaffold' how you write and articulate literature reviews, because your assessment of others' work requires you to view academic articles through their eyes and starting points. To this end, the assignment has merit in forcing you to keep asking the question 'Where is this critic/reviewer coming from in their premises and assumptions'?
