The electric-powered aircraft is technically feasible and theoretically possible for commercial transport within two to four decades, according to the missions planned.
Thank you for your valuable comment dear researchers.
I was thinking about solar paint. If it can be made efficient and painting the whole surface of the aircraft (out side and some part inside), it may provide us the necessary power but I am not still sure about the storage mechanism and back up power source.
I think we can start by making it hybrid (both electric and fuel) like HV (hybrid vehicle) to minimize fuel consumption and consequently reduce co2 emission.
What about the drive mechanisms (motors) ? Can we replace high power jet engines with motor drives of equivalent power density? I think we have to consider these potential challenges for the future new generation electric aircraft to come to reality?
The future of energy is Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP). That is, space stations in orbit with photovoltaic panels which collect sun energy, transform it into electricity and then beam it down to earth in the form of microwaves where it is re-transformed into electricity and fed to the grid.
Therefore, in an all-electric world aircraft would have to be electric-powered. Development of electric-powered aircraft is under way with some small experimental aircraft. To reach the goal of large electric-powered transport aircraft an increase in electric motor power-to-weight ratio and battery electric storage capacity of the order of 500 to 1000 % must be achieved. In addition, the cost of placement into earth orbit would have to be reduced by at least 90 %.
Don't you think this is too ambitious; planning to radiate electric power from space station and converting and feeding the grid...is this an on going research? have the cost for all this process considered? After all, we care about the environment and also about the cost of energy!
What are the challenges in transforming air crafts power source from fuel to electric?
Dear all, I have known the answer to my question at last. Thank you for your contribution too.
The challenges to make the airliners to fully electrical operated is mainly high density electric power storage device (could be battery or other), high power density light- weighted electric motors (PM motor is a candidate), and the necesssity of size and weight reduction causing the use of high voltage which consequently caused a design complexity on both control and installation.
