MOLAND is actually the name of an Irish Project (Monitoring Land Cover), which is coordinated by the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. The basic objective of the project is to provide up-to-date, standardised, comparable information on the past, current, and likely future land use development in Europe. Under MOLAND, an urban growth model has been developed, which is used to assess the likely impact of current spatial planning and policies on future land use development. To date, the MOLAND methodology has been applied to around forty urban study areas throughout Europe. One of the MOLAND study areas is the Greater Dublin Area in the Republic of Ireland.
