I am trying to record glutamate and GABA responses with ChR2 stimulation from striatal MSNs, and I am finding this weird spike in some of my recordings, but not in most. I am using a low-Cl internal and recording glu and GABA current from same neuron using reversal current. In my recordings, I am supposed to find some NR neurons. However in some cases (even when there is GABA or glu response), I am seeing this very fast spiking event which is inexplicable (please see graphs). The opto stimulation is 5 ms. But the event is less than 1 ms, and has a peak of 5-15 pA current,. I am not sure what are these! Can anyone help?

this looks like a technical artefact. It occurs at the moment when opto-stimulation is turned on, right? It is probably a far-field crosstalk by the electric circuit which drives Your light source: the switch or current control thyristor or the light emitting bulb emits an electromagnetic discharge when a sudden peak flow of electrons occurs during on-phase.
And Your patch-clamp recorder has a very high input impedance and amplification rate, so it is very sensitive to electric crosstalk...
A solution would be a faraday cage isolation of Your testbed - or just ignore them :)
