The world’s first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973, when Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, called a rival telecommunications company and informed them he was speaking via a mobile phone. The phone Cooper used if you could call it that – weighed a staggering 1.1 kg and measured in at 228.6x127x44.4 mm. With this prototype device, you got 30 minutes of talk-time and it took around 10 hours to charge.
In 1983, Motorola released its first commercial mobile phone, known as the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. The handset offered 30 minutes of talk-time, six hours standby, and could store 30 phone numbers. It also cost £2639 ($3995).

1960: In the 1960 there were closed networks where companies had their own base stations. Employees could have their own "radio telephones". In this way they could have contact between cars and the home base for the company.
1966: In a cooperation between the Norwegian Defense Institute and the Simonsen company there was developed a "radio telephone" that managed to connect ordinary phone lines and mobile phones in cars and between cars. 1969: The "radio phones" change name to "mobile phones" and was now part of the ordinary phone infrastructure in Norway. The company Simonsen was very early with this technology in the world. 1981: Norway now has 30.000 mobile phone numbers and users. This is the manual OLT network. This is at this time number one in the world. 1985: Trains get mobile pay phones in Norway. Plans are made for hand held phones that weigh less than 400 gr. 1986: The first hand held phones are produced. It would cost more than $3000 USD in Norway. 1987: Norway is still number 3 (three) in the world with 81.000 mobile phones. You can even call inside road tunnels at this time. 1988: Norway has the largest density of mobile phones with 33 phone per 1000 people. 1995: Text is enabled in Norway from phone to phone. 1998: 20% of all youth have a mobile phone. 2002: 3.201.554 mobile phone subscribers. 2003: MMS is released
2004: Statistics claim that all Norwegian youth age 16-19 have a mobile phone each. 2005: 3G-mobile network is released with video phone and TV possibilities.

A question of definition of course, but here is the first mobile phone system i Sweden, the ”System Lauhren” from 1956. It could manage 1000 users and a unit was so handy that the trunk of a car was enough.
