I am working on solidification of metals.
Iron/steel has been intensively studied. Generally all the steels contain impurities and intermetallics or precipitates. Therefore, they can nucleate in a heterogeneous way and form crystallites with a small driving force or undercooling.
Naturally, a pure iron liquid would nucleate and grow into crystallites in a homogeneous way. Then I expect a large undercooling is required.
I tried to find out experimental works on solidification of pure iron.
Might you please help me in this issue?

I have no direct answer. One might look into the foundry literature/solidifcation literature (e.g. Dantzig & Rappaz). But I think most experimental work has been done with lower melting model substances. Undercooling should be substantial, but we have a likely non-facetting material with low melting entropy and small interfacial energy melt/solid.

I tried and checked some literature. However, the experimental difficulties, purity of samples, remaining gases, e.g. O, CO, H2O in the chambers make me worried about the reliability.
I hope that I can get some more answers from the experimentalists and modelling people.
