Rohith R Krishnan: What is " recent references" means? If I am sending an article in 2017, then papers published in which years can be considered as "recent"?
From my experience, if you are sending an article in 2017, papers which have been published between 2013 and 2017, that is, within the last five years including the year of submission, can be considered, by a general point of view, as ''recent''.
The obvious answer might be that this requirement is to make sure that you as an author are aware of the recent and latest discussion concerning the topic. However, there may be cases where you revisit an older discussion because you are able to shed new light on it based on your research / new data. In those cases the requirement to include recent references could be lifted. It may be wise to explicitly address the absence of recvent literature and/or to contact one of the editors of the journal you wish to submit to and explain the situation.
What is the role of "recent references" while writing research papers?
Before writing a research paper, rigorous literature review including the latest references is needed. Reason being (not exhaustive list):
ensuring you are citing the latest theories & not the outdated theories e.g. can you imagine your conceptual framework / research model is underpinning on obsolete theories which have been defunct - if this is the case you will face expected repercussion from reviewers.
ensuring you are using the latest research method, instrument or survey questionnaire (for social science research) because latest research instrument etc. can be found in the latest papers. If you are using the outdated / flawed instrument in your research, you might want to redo the experiment / data collection again.
recent references / papers already reviewed the older literature & synthesized the literature so that you don't need to reinvent the wheel again.
Dear Bosman and Han Ping, Thank you verymuch for your answers.
Some personal chats and comments give me some suggestions,
They are,
Latest references (published with in3 yrs) shows that my research topic is current.
Latest reference to papers which are published in a journal that I am proposed to send my article shows that my paper is within the scope of the journal and they increase the impact factor of the journal.
First point is already clear from your answers. So please comment on the last two points.
The recent references mark the half-life of your cited literature. The younger the reference age , the more dynamic is the field. Also, this requirement is designed to indicate how much you are acquainted with recent writings in the field.
When I review a manuscript, i want to see half of the references from the most recent five years.
Of course, there are some famous ground-breaking studies from the past which are worthy of being cited, but writers need to show that they are basing their research on the most recent scholarly literature.
Here all the respectable persons talked about the necessity of recent references. Now I hope my answer in our previous discussion, which is about the inclusion of recent references is clear.
I agree with the insightful responses of the colleagues. In addition, concerning the questions ''why some journals demand authors to include recent references from the same journal? Is this only to show that the submitted manuscript is within the scope of the journal?, or anything related with impact factor of the journal?'' of dear Rohith R Krishnan (last response, page 1 of the thread), I consider that a submitted manuscript is within or not the scope of a journal, irrespective of the inclusion of recent references from the journal.
"....but for a journal, you need more work, more experiments, and more references but published during the last 2 years,"
This is a part of a personal chat with Dr. Tlelo, he is a reviewer of many reputed journals.
I don't know whether journals directly demand it in author info page or not.
But scopus indexed journals like indian journal of science and technology want us to add the recent references from their own journal while preparing camera ready paper. Elsevier journas like AEU also need recent references from their journals to start reveiwing our work.
Going through the answers, it can be found that for streams like science and technology, articles published more than 2 years ago can be considered as old. There is also answers like "how many years is old" is deppend upon journal and reviewers.
You posted there about paper rejection for the reason that references are too old.
These all shows that there is "age for sources"
There are exceptional cases like the basic theories.
I am working in the field electronics science-analog circuits. That may be the reason Dr Tlelo talked so.

Manuscript should have some significant advantages over others and comparable with standard methods.A review of recent literature should be included and critically commented on them. One should be careful in simply copying and pasting from recent publications.Always standard books, review article should be consulted and included. Some of my Letter to Editor articles in my profile on RG are worth reading and can serve as an eye opener for research scholars.

Thank you Dr. D. P. S. Rathore for sharing your valuable papers.
Also I am appreciating C. Srinivas for the effort he has taken.
Also, thanking Malini for her question "Any suggestions on writing effective papers for high impact journals", which is the reason for this discussion.
I hope this discussion gives some points for all those who wish to publish good quality research papers.
Greetings, thank you for your question. You must have up to date for your work and this will get from recent references. Some times you have a missing information if you get only old references.
