Languages shape the way we think about space, time, colors, and objects. Scientists found effects of language on how people construe events, reason about causality, understand material substance, perceive emotion, reason about other people's minds and even in the way they choose professions and spouses.
This is an interesting question. There have been conflicting reports regarding the subject matter. One school of thought (Lingualism) claim that there is no thought without language. Others (language of thought) believe that language is essential for thoughts transfer.
What makes it more complicated is a study (3rd link) which reports that people with global aphasia, who have almost no ability to understand or produce language, were able to add and subtract, solve logic problems, think about another person’s thoughts, appreciate music, and successfully navigate their environments. This indicate a disjoint kind of association.
In African settings, language has no effect on thinking. It is culture and tribes that affect our thinking. Some cultures think small and others think big.
Language and thinking are closely related. Have you ever questioned what language you dream in? Our thoughts are shaped by life experiences especially from childhood where the main influence was from parents and teachers. Language is an important aspect of our upbringing.

This has been subject of much dispute over the years - the so called Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. In literature, for instance, it is by far the number one showcase in SF texts that in one way or another deal with language. Excellent examples of that include famous George Orwell’s 1984, Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life, and The Dispossessedby Ursula Le Guin. There are some tremendous research papers on that from a linguistic point of vi as well. I recommend How Language Shapes Thought: The languages we speak affect our perceptions of the world by Lera Boroditsky and The Whorfian time warp: Representing duration through the language hourglass by Bylund E, et al.
I also believe that to some extent language has the power of influencing people’s thoughts. That’s why, for example, people try so hard to prevent others from using words they consider offensive.
I have written a number of papers on the subject and its connexions with SF, should you be interested.
, I’m afraid you forgot to mention the source of your answer. I guess this is where you copied it from: http://www.rationalskepticism.org/linguistics/how-does-our-language-shape-the-way-we-think-t16321.html
