Reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s Fever 1793 (2000), I realise how the characters' experience in the text echoes the situation we are living today. What is the role of people in times of epidemics?
As prevention is better than cure, educated persons can help the public by imparting information on personal hygiene, environmental sanitation etc.In case of recent Coronavirus epidemic in several countries, education of people about good hand hygiene by regularly washing the hands with soap and water or an alcohol based sanitizer, using mask on the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching nose, eyes and mouth with fingers, keeping a distance of about 3 feet from self to other person who is sneezing or coughing, and seeking medical advice when fever, cough and difficulty in breathing, and staying at home during illness can be very useful in the prevention of disease.
Totally agree with Mahendra pal sir, since no concrete cure is available for this COVID-19 so prevention is the best way. And educated and learned people of the society has an important role to play by imparting proper information and education on it. Each one teach one on hand hygiene and proper sanitisation methods.
The role of medically educated people in times of medical epidemics would be to provide factual data and to quell the fears and attempt to stop rumors related to the false information that is passed during these times. I believe that my staff and patients are calmer when I am calm and transparent related to the issue. It is our role to provide solid factual education and information and then stand by those who also are doing the same.
I fully support what the Prime Minister of Italy 'Giuseppe Conte' quoted addressing his nation, “Let’s remain distant today so we can hug with more warmth and run faster tomorrow.” Norbert Elias
Undoubtedly, keeping distance, raising awareness, and urging social solidarity in such circumstances is the responsibility of educated people. This is what educated people must know, believe, convey, and apply.
