The relationship between research and innovation is significant, dependence and interchangeable. Several papers were studied the effect between them. Some of which are:
1.Tuna et al. (2015). The Relationship Between Research & Development Expenditures and Economic Growth. Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 195 ( 2015 ), pp. 501 – 507.
2. Kwanghui Lim (2004).The relationship between research and innovation in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries (1981–1997). Research Policy Volume 33, Issue 2, March 2004, Pages 287-321.
In business terms, innovation is seen as a process of idea creation, a development of an invention and ultimately the introduction of a new product, process or service to the market (Thornhill, 2006). It is the process that covers product design, production system design, product introduction processes and start of production (Johanssen, 2008). “This includes the generation of opportunities, their selection and transformation into artefacts (manufactured products) and activities (services) offered to customers and the institutionalization of improvements in the new product development (NPD) activities themselves” (Ale Ebrahim Ahmed &Taha,2010).
Research
The most common traditional definition of research is that it is a study regarding a particular concern or gap that has been observed in a certain field/area; then this concern is analyzed/examined so that a solution is provided using scientific methods to prove if the solution is workable.
According to Baht (2018) research types include:
Basic research which is mainly for knowledge improvement
Applied research whose main attention is to solve problems that affect real life issues
Problem oriented research which analyses the cause of the challenges or problems faced in a certain field and then provide possible solutions
Hence the relationship between the two is that both require solutions to a perceived problem.
innovation is largely seen as the result of scientific discoveries made at public laboratories, universities or companies. Numerous examples over the course of history strengthen this perception: the discovery of x-rays, leading to radiography; laser, a pure product of quantum mechanics, etc.
What is the relationship between research and innovation?
The objective of research is contributing to knowledge whereas the objective of innovation is contributing to outcome e.g. improvement, quality of service, commercialization etc. With knowledge we can change the outcome. Hence, research can lead to innovation.
Thanks for this interesting question. The meaning of Innovation is "a new idea, method, or device" - (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/innovation)
This means that innovation and research go hand in hand as some of the above answers suggest. In a paradigm shift, innovation as a new idea is always first but has then to be supported by research. This research can then give rise to new innovative ideas. Research also can give way to new devices, techniques or technology.
So there is a feed back loop between Innovation and Research going in both directions which is also linked to new devices, techniques or technology.
What interests me in this feed back loop is the ethical and moral aspect. Not all techniques are necessarily ethical from the perspectives of some people - and here I am thinking of bio medical technology. So somewhere or another, I would like to add the consideration of ethics to the loop. But maybe this itself is "innovative".
There are no innovation without a proper research. So I assume that an innovation is the result of a research but a research not always results in an innovation.
I would expand on Emmanuel's answer in that there are several distinctions to be made before one can establish causal or correlation effects.
The key idea of innovation is the diffusion into market. This implies solving a problem for the market and in turn the market will adopt it.Research in general terms is the structured approach of gathering information and investigating a phenomena to establish facts. Fact finding has little to do with innovation and diffusion into market (except where research is used in the sense mentioned by Alaa where the research is directed towards innovation, but this is a very narrow view of the more general notion of research). Development on the other hand when focused on technological development can go hand in hand with research. This also does not imply practical applications since it can be an intermediate step to build and artifact to be able to test a hypothesis.
Inventions can be guided by research and development but as evidenced from the amount of patents submitted and those that have commercial value, also do not imply either correlation and much less causation.
Yes...as some of our colleagues have said, research leads to innovation. Research is systematic and uses a method for approaching a result, searching for the solution of a problem or for finding something new. I would say there´s no innovation without research, even when it´s not formal. For example, when you´re testing a new product in the market you´re doing some kind of research, which is elementary and maybe not documented. However, formal efforts lead to consistent results, able to be replicated in other contexts.
I in general is the modification innovation via research in an invention, idea, plan or policy to suit the new conditions and environment to produce better results with application of the modified created idea, concept or invention
Your question is too large to have a precise answer.
Here is one type of relationship between R&D and inno.
Cohen, W. M., & Levinthal, D. A. (1989). Innovation and learning: the two faces of R & D. The economic journal, 99(397), 569-596.
or this one:

The OSLO MANUAL is also a good reference to define innovation
Dear Kulvir Singh , I think we researchers, we might try to think/do research which respond to the existing problems in our society instead of just writing without contribution. if we reach on this stage now our researches will be called innovative. Also, i think innovation is about doing the existing scenarios but using different approach, with reduced time/costs/etc. and contributing to the theory and practicability compared to the existing in your areas of interest. when you say invention is to create new or re-innovate which totally different from what we usual have in our daily activities.
